These championships were held at a very windy Royal Hospital School course and attracted the best young runners from across the region for what proved to be a tough race. The quality of the opposition was very high, much higher than they would normally experience, and it was to the credit of those that attended that they were prepared to compete at this level. All of them gained valuable experience which would not be possible in the Suffolk Winter league. All of them raised their profile and all the U13s were selected for Suffolk in the inter counties at Croydon later this year.
Chloe Godbold was the only U13 female Harrier to run and came 11th in a time of 13:13. The best performance of the day was Henry Milldown getting 2nd (10:54) in the U13 boys race and with help from Chris Jones (6th) and Josh Richards they achieved 2nd place in the team event as well.
Olivia Mair and Gabby Hartfield were the U15 girls representatives up against Gemma Holloway the premier U15 cross country runner in this area and did very well in finishing in 17:06 and 18:59 respectively. Richard Ling produced a storming finish to get 6th place (14:55) in the U15 boys with George Williams managing 15:57 in his first championship meeting.
Finally Ross Tenant did very well finishing 2nd in the U17 race in a time of 19:29 with his clubmate Tobias Rankin in 14th with 21;01.

Ross Fawcett continued his impressive recent road running form after taking wins at the Saxons 5 mile race and the Great East 10k he added to to his race victories with a win at the Hadleigh 10 mile race. Racing a distance he had never even ran before in training, Ross ran a sensible and well paced race to storm to victory in a time of 58:52. Following Ross around was Neil Gillingham who was aiming to break 70 minutes for the first time the distance. Neil ran a well calculated race and recorded a negative spilt for the race and finished in 48th position in a new pb of 68:41. An impressive 268 athletes completed the hilly course.
The full 10 mile race was supported by a junior fun run and Harriers had a five athletes taking part in this race too. Chris Jones ran well to finish in 6th position, followed home by Angus Harrington in 7th position. Chloe Godbold was the next Harrier home in 12th position closely followed home by Lauren Ramsey in 13th position. The final Harrier home was Carly Goode in 19th position. A total of 69 junior athletes completed the course.

Congratulations to Kieran Clements for his win in the junior race at the first cross challenge race of the season at Bristol. The following is an extract from a report on the day's races on the UKA website:-
In the junior men's race it was Kieran Clements who was dominant at the front, with Liam Brady of Ireland chasing hard.
Finishing in a time of 23.31, Clements, who went off hard and didn't look back, was the impressive winner followed by Brady (24.16) and Alex Hill in third place in 24.24.
"I'm pleased with my performance today, I expected a bit more of a challenge but it was good to get out there and slog it out by myself and get some good preparation for Liverpool," said Clements.
"Liverpool is the big target and if I get into the team for the Europeans that would be pretty much good enough for me this year. If I get there I would push for a top 15 place, so I will just see what I can do.
"It was a tough course, I kicked a lap too early not realising I had another lap to go, so it was quite tough." (UKA, 2011)

On a warm sunny Sunday morning the 3rd edition of the relaunched Ipswich Half Marathon took place. The course itself is a challenging course. The race starts near Northgate before heading into town via Christchurch Park running along the main shopping street in Ipswich, which all is a very fast part of the race as there are many downhill sections in this part. Then it becomes tough, heading out of town it heads up High Street which is nice and hilly and then back along the Bridleway in Christchurch Park which is hilly. After this the race heads towards Dale Hall Lane and then out of Ipswich. The race then has two more steep hills before returning to Ipswich near Humber Doucy Lane and then back to Northgate for one lap of the track and then finish.
Ipswich Harriers had three athletes taking part this year. Chris Rooke who finished second last year returned to have another at taking the title. Chris battled hard to finish second again in a good time of 76:13. Following Chris home was Neil Gillingham in a time of 98:16 in 101st position completing his seventh half marathon of the year. Kirsty Thorndyke was the third Harrier to take part and the only Harrier female to take part ran a new personal best of 1:51:53 in 334th position in her third half marathon of the year. A total of 857 runners completed the course.

Neil completed the Robin Hood Marathon in Nottingham in a time of 3 hours 41 mins and 31 secs in 262nd place. The following is Neil's review of the event:-
The Robin Hood Marathon is my third marathon within a year and a half and with previous times of 4h42m and 3h56m, I was hoping to run around the 4 hour mark as I had been training lightly for this marathon for the furthest run pre rsce being only 10 miles.
The marathon runs alongside the half marathon and for the first 12.5 miles follow the same scenic route.
Starting and finishing alongside the river Trent at Victoria Embankment, you will run past many of Nottingham's historical and well known landmarks including Robin Hood himself just outside Nottingham Castle, Wollaton Deer Park and Wollaton Hall. As you pass through Nottingham University you will view the magnificent Trent Building as you run around the lake before returning past the Experian building and onto the tree lined Victoria Embankment to start the second half of the race. The first half of the race is hilly.
At approximately 12.5 miles the full marathon runners split off from the half marathon runners and run along the promenade path by the Trent and under Trent Bridge before passing over Lady Bay Bridge, leaving the city and into Nottinghamshire. The route then takes in the National Water Sports Centre and Holme Pierrepont Hall before returning along the Trent cycle path to County Hall and passes over the old toll bridge and onto the tree lined Victoria Embankment to the finish. The race after 10.5 miles is almost entirely flat.
The weather on race day was good for running until in the marathon you turned for home at the National Water Sports Centre as there was a strong headwind for 5 of the final 6 miles which was testing for the best and the most experienced of the athletes.
This time was a 15 minute improvement of my Virgin London Marathon performance this year and a whole hour of my 2010 Virgin London Marathon performance. Things are looking encouraging for a potential sub 3h30m clocking at my next marathon dependant on training, the course and weather conditions.

Dear Ipswich Harrier,
As you may or may not know, Keith Moore and myself have volunteered to coordinate and organise the ipswich end of the saxons, the joint team with chelmsford we enter in the national junior league.
This is the highest level at which an ipswich team can compete in and is an important step up from the eastern young athletes which is why the club consider it to be the highest priority for their athletes to compete in.
We are not going to force anyone into competing but I believe the level of competition will benefit all athletes right through from a performance level to the experience to be gained from participating. If you are interested, please let me know either by email or contact me on clubnghts. Any interest will not be considered as an obligation on your part, we just want to find out who would like the experience.
The website is supplied below where you can get more information, but these are the important dates and venues for the matches:
Windsor slough and eton 1st may
chelmsford 29th may
basildon 10th july
blackheath and bromley 24th july
If you have any questions or concerns let me know and I will answer them. If you know of someone who does not have access to emails or has recently joined the club please pass the information on.
http://www.nationaljuniorathleticleague.co.uk/
a timetable will be sent out separately.
Thanks

Katy is the Champion! by Wendy Sealy
It was a busy weekend following a busy season for Katy Sealy, winning Gold in the East and Suffolk U20 Heptathlon and Silver in the South of England Championships.
Just one week after finishing 10th at the English Schools Senior Girls Heptathlon in Birmingham, Katy has now added the Suffolk Heptathlon title to her individual titles in the High Jump, Long Jump, Javelin, Shot and 100m Hurdles, won earlier in the year.
At Bedford last weekend she increased her points score to 4180 narrowly missing her season target of 4200 points. That’s an improvement this year of 575 points. Katy started well with a PB in the hurdles in 16.72 seconds followed by an excellent PB with her first attempt clearance of 1m63 in the high jump. She narrowly missed improving that PB by just taking the bar off at 1m66. She then threw 9m02 in the shot putt and equalled her personal best in the 200m with a time of 28.15s. All these performances were an improvement on what she had achieved in Birmingham the previous week.
She started day 2 with another performance stronger than the previous week with a solid long jump of 5m09 just 1cm short of her season’s best. She finished the day with a throw of 35m88 in the javelin and a run of 2m44s in the 800m placing Katy second in the South of England U20 Championships and claiming gold for the East of England and Suffolk.
This points score of 4180 ranks Katy 18th in the UK for U20 womens heptathlon and 32nd of all women in the UK. Katy has high hopes of improving these rankings as she still has a year remaining as an U20 athlete and has set herself the target of reaching the national standard of 4600 points next year.
The 17 year old will now concentrate on her winter training and completing her A-levels at Farlingaye High School.

Southern Women's League - the last battle!
After a hard fought battle on Saturday 30th August at Braintree, Ipswich Harriers won Division 2North.
We started the day just 23 points behind the leaders, Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets. They did their best to keep their lead, but we were equally determined to catch up the deficit. Both clubs put athletes into every possible event, but on the day we managed to beat them by 444 points to 412 - a lead of 32 points. The atmosphere in the Harriers camp was wonderful, with everyone cheering on whoever was competing at the time. We had athletes giving their best in their specialist events, but also doing some very unusual ones. Every single point that was won contributed to the success of the club, so congratulations and thanks to everyone who has competed in this league during the season. See you in Division 1 next year!

Southern Women's League 31st May by Elizabeth Welbourn
A lovely warm, dry, sunny day with very little wind made for a great day out for the U15 girls' and senior women's teams at Cambridge on Saturday 31st May.
Of the 18 athletes who competed, several achieved PBs, and there were many excellent results. It would be hard to pick out any here for particular mention, so please look at the results on the SWL website (We are in division 2N)
Many of the team members did events "for a point", some taking on events they had not tried before, and discovering new talents. With 10 teams in the match, these "extra" events took on great importance in the chase for points. We were rewarded by an excellent 2nd place, 20 points behind the home team, Cambridge and Coleridge AC, and only 4 points ahead of Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets AC. I really hope that we will have a good turn-out for the next meeting, at Northgate, on Saturday 28th June, when we need to show Cambridge that we too can win at home! Well done and thank you to everyone who competed at Cambridge.

British Masters Champs. Lea Valley. 23rd - 24th Feb 08, by Malcolm Fenton
Harriers,
Just to inform you that I won two National Titles at the above Championships. Winning the Hammer and Weight Throw in the M50 age group.
The Hammer was won with a very poor 49.69m, but was still 9m ahead of the 2nd placer.
The Weight was won with 19.69m, some 3m ahead of 2nd place, a distance only ever beaten by myself by a Briton.
The weekend also saw my number of titles at County level and above go through the 200 mark, to 201.
Regards,
Malcolm Fenton

Katy gets the Silver! by Wendy Sealy
Thought you might like to know that Katy Sealy won the silver medal in the very soggy U17 womens' high jump at the South of England Chamionships in Ashford on Sunday. Her second attempt clearance at 1m55 won her the silver medal on countback, just one failed attempt behind the gold medal winner who also cleared 1m55. Katy was one of three athletes who having cleared 1m55 attempted 1m60 to win the competition and all came very close in very difficult conditions. Katy also came 7th in the U17 womens' long jump with 5m06.

JOE BLOOMFIELD'S CROATIA TRIP by CRAIG BLOOMFIELD
Joe has been selected to compete in an
International Throws Meeting in Varazdin, Croatia on the 7th July. Joe will be
competing as part of the Hammer Circle's Team.
Although very early in the season Joe is currently ranked 2nd in the UK in the U17 Mens
Hammer and is eager to regain the top spot.
This will an ideal opportunity for Joe to experience competition in a part of the world
with very strong hammer throwing traditions. He will be competing alongside senior and
junior Internationals from a number of countries.
Joe has been extremely committed over the winter and has rarely missed any of his 6
days a week training schedule - half of which he spends weight training in our garage
on his own.
I am truly delighted his hard work has been rewarded in this way.

GOLD FOR IPSWICH GIRLS, by Ricky Hanley
Katy Sealy celebrated selection to the England Athletics East Combined Events Squad with a Gold and Silver medal at the Eastern Athletics Indoor Championships at Chelmsford. She will receive support and help with planning and progression of her training and competitive activities for the season and also sessions with some of the Country’s top Event Coaches. It was Katy’s second indoor competition at the fantastic Melbourne Park facility in February, collecting a bronze in the Essex Indoor championships and picking up a Pb of 1.60 whilst competing as a guest. In a crowded arena the Farlingaye High school Under 17 dominated the High jump winning with 1.55 and then went on to win silver in the shot with 8.17. Under 13 Charlotte Shelley is beginning to look like a multi event athlete picking up 2 silver medals in the Long Jump with 4.17 and the 60m hurdles crossing the line in a time of 10.7. At the West Norfolk Indoor Championships at Kings Lynn, Charlotte took gold in High jump with 1.35 and is currently top of the UK Athletics regional rankings. She also collected a bronze in the hurdles with a time of 10.8. Charlotte Cattermole won a silver in a very tight under 15 60m hurdles with 1st 2nd and 3rd all given the same time clocking a very quick 9.7 seconds.

Suffolk Sports Awards held on Sunday 15th October. Steve was presented with the Ipswich Town Coach of the Year
Award by Ipswich Town chairman David Sheepshanks. Ellie Sprake was also at the awards where she was runner up
in the Grassroots Young Sports Personality of the Year.
Congratulations to coach Steve Benson on his appointment as a GB team manager for the
U20 cross country competition against Portugal in Lisbon on 15th January.
The following was part of a report on the UKA website about the Cardiff UK Challenge cross country races on 22nd January and
refers to Ellie's victory in the U17 women's race-
"Under 17 women 4km: Ellie Sprake (Ipswich) became the newest Challenge winner in Steve Benson’s highly successful
training group a week after securing the Suffolk Under 17 title. She got away from the pack just before halfway and never
looked back, making the six-hour journey well worth while – and probably needing the six-hour return trip to get the smile
of delight off her face."
Harriers enjoyed a good day at the Suffolk County Champs at RAF Barnham on 15th January 2006 with four individual wins and
a team 1st in the U17 men. The race winners were Kelvin Hardy, Jim Norris, Laura O'dell and Ellie Sprake.
One fixture to go in the Suffolk Winter XC League and we're still holding on to top spot after another fine club
performance at the latest meeting at Stowmarket on 8th January. Congratulations must go to James Calvert and Laura O'Dell
who enjoyed individual wins which one hopes will get proper recognition in the press! Don't forget the change of venue
for the last meeting on 12th Feb - now Culford School.

2005

Kelvin Hardy was 6th at the Lotto Brussels Crosscup in Belgium on 18th December
representing England.

Congratulations to Kelvin Hardy on his team silver medal running for Great Britain
and Northern Ireland at the European Cross Country Championships staged in Tilburg,
Netherlands, on Sunday 11 December. Kelvin was third GB runner home in 24th place. This weekend Kelvin will be representing
England at a competition in Belgium.
Here's a cross country report just in from our man in the field Kevin Peirce:-
"After several years of obvious decline, Ipswich Harrier's involvement in cross country has made a rapid and glorious come back during this 2005 Suffolk Winter League season. Perhaps it's the achievement of 'Radcliffe/Holmes' having an effect? Or maybe other factors have come into play that are attracting more of our club members into the more 'adventurous' side of the sport? Whatever the reason, it's had the positive effect of propelling Harriers into the overall top spot so far in the Suffolk Winter League - and with good prospects to go on and win the league in February. And we can do better yet...
We have been well represented in all parts of the league (males and females, juniors and seniors) with an amazing turn out in the senior male and female races. In fact we have the lead in a number of individual categories (female 17, female 40, male 17) and in most of the others have athletes in the top five places. What a result.
The junior results tell a similar story with two top slots currently taken (boys 13, boys 17) and expectations for other groups by the end of the season. However, it is here where we could do better. The juniors that have competed have done so with amazing dedication, but there are a number of juniors who could and should be out there racing for the club. The boys are currently holding the top spot, and the girls are third! So come on juniors, get out there in January and run for your club and help get us into those top spots! Everyone of all abilities are welcome as every point scored can count towards our final league standings. There is also an additional bonus for taking part in the Suffolk Winter League. We have all signed an agreement with Harriers to race under the Ipswich Harriers name in a good proportion of available races throughout any given year. Therefore, racing in the Suffolk Winter League is a local and easy way to build up your Harriers races.
So with the brilliant turn outs at a very muddy Framlingham (over 27 athletes), a bitterly cold Bungay (over 25 athletes) and a sunny Woodbridge (over 25 athletes) perhaps it's time to consider resurrecting the Harriers team coach, or maybe even just dust off the old Ipswich Harriers standard that we once thrust proudly into ground at every league event we attended in the old Peter Scott days. If we finish the league this year as we started some of this should certainly be considered next season.
