Harriers in Crisis?
Ipswich Harriers membership is flourishing, coaches and officials are qualifying at higher levels and many of our athletes are excelling in their particular disciplines. Indeed, it is reasonable to expect that, what was a successful Cross-Country season will shortly be followed by an equally successful Track and Field season. So, everything in garden is rosy? Unfortunately not. Harrier’s administration is in urgent need of assistance at all levels. It is certain that, at the next AGM in October 2008, there will be a number of vacancies on the committee. Not withstanding the fact that the club constitution requires a minimum number of committee members, the club cannot function practically or effectively without the help of individuals who are willing to give their time freely for the good of the athletes and the club, either as committee members or in other supporting posts. Consequently it is no exaggeration to say that, unless a number of volunteers are recruited during the next few months, the future of Ipswich Harriers is bleak. Indeed, the possibility of the club being obliged to reduce membership numbers cannot be ignored. Whilst existing athletes may be able to find alternative clubs, many prospective athletes could be lost to the sport, missing out on the training, competitive opportunities and social engagement they may otherwise have enjoyed. Ipswich Harriers is now appealing for volunteers to take up the challenge of helping to manage the club at all levels, thus ensuring that it continues to develop successful and dedicated officials, coaches and athletes as it takes its rightful place in the build up to 2012. If you are able to help Ipswich Harriers maintain its position and reputation as a long established and respected institution, please contact Acting Chairman, John Tunaley at 07768940120 or Acting Secretary, Andy Johnson at 01473 625104. Be sure you will receive a very warm welcome.

Southern Women's League 31st May by Elizabeth Welbourn

A lovely warm, dry, sunny day with very little wind made for a great day out for the U15 girls' and senior women's teams at Cambridge on Saturday 31st May. Of the 18 athletes who competed, several achieved PBs, and there were many excellent results. It would be hard to pick out any here for particular mention, so please look at the results on the SWL website (We are in division 2N) Many of the team members did events "for a point", some taking on events they had not tried before, and discovering new talents. With 10 teams in the match, these "extra" events took on great importance in the chase for points. We were rewarded by an excellent 2nd place, 20 points behind the home team, Cambridge and Coleridge AC, and only 4 points ahead of Victoria Park and Tower Hamlets AC. I really hope that we will have a good turn-out for the next meeting, at Northgate, on Saturday 28th June, when we need to show Cambridge that we too can win at home! Well done and thank you to everyone who competed at Cambridge.
